The Dart: A gift from Skip Jack

SKIP JACK I received a call from a university friend asking, in fact ordering, for joining them on visit to Gadani, Ship-breaking Yard. It was a casual promise that I made to be with on this time long ago, in fact I was curious to visit that place. So I just pack and went to his home where we stay in night and then left for Gadani in the morning where  Skip Jack  was waiting for us. I and My Friends As soon as we step up on the ship, we act like Pirates, searching every single cabin every single room and trying to pick any thing that we thought was worthy for us. I was interested in visiting this fantasy land. I can recall every single film in which ship was used as prop. My moment of shout was when I visited Kitchen. I saw a packs of Coffee and a round shaped official sized DART BOARD with so many darts were on the floor. I was like I want it at any cost. My friend showing his ge...

Stop War start Tennis at Wagah

Indo-Pak sporting ties ended with the 2008 terror attacks on Mumbai. A recent melt in relations and a resumption of the tenuous peace process earlier this year has raised hopes that direct sports matches can resume, notably in India and Pakistan’s twin obsession of cricket. Giving security  to 01 will be less headache than 11.Yes I am giving a Rough Idea for a  “peace match"  tennis war between the nuclear-armed rivals. It will be a big commercial event as Aisam has  got a fan following and is endorsing so many  brands. It will get a resonable media coverage. T hey can even take advatnage of  campaign named "Aman ki Asha" & geo super will be interested in the broadcast of the event not onl y because it comes under Jang Group but because of the commercial value of the event also. The 31-Indian travelled to Pakistan and said  “It’s nice to be in Pakistan and I hope we resume tennis between the two ...

Tests for Test

Photo: Reverse Sweep Test cricket has been has always been played during the daytime but the decreasing  viewer-ship  of the game wake ICC to take some steps in this regard. ICC is now planning to introduce day-night multi day test matches. The game, like ODIs, will start in daylight but will reach to end at night under floodlights. Test cricket is a real test of mental and physical skills of players . Fans of test match cricket will be very cautious of any attempt to change the current format.  If this strategic experiment works  then the problem of play finishing early due to bad light would not be an issue. This will resolve a very frustrating issue of test matches as play is sometimes called off for bad light when it appears to be fine. The use of floodlights would ensure no playing time would be lost due to issues with poor visibility. Photo Compose: Saddam Siddiqui Color of ball is the next matter of concern in this regard. The only other alte...

Green Shirt or US $? Why Such Hockey

Google Images It's a situation no sportsperson should ever find himself in,  by playing in the World Series Hockey tournament at the risk of forfeiting his Green shirt. Caught between the i nsecurities stemming from advancing age, finance and limited opportunities of playing competitive hockey in Pakistan have forced the player to choose WSH even at cost of national representation in olympics. PHF Website The PHF’s stance was in accordance with the FIH's wishes that since the WSH was being organised by the unrecognised hockey body, the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), it was illegal.  This dilemma reminds me Indian Cricket League recently and Kerry Packer in 70s and responses made by our national heroes of the most popular and sponsored game in Pakistan.  They were also banned but later an apology letter allows them to wear Green Caps. History might repeat itself in this case. Google Images Financially cricketers a...

Preview of The toughest fight: Amir v/s Peterson

Recent hype created by Geo Super made me curious about this weekend’s big fight–Amir Khan/Lamont Peterson. If you ask Pakistani, they will tell you that Khan is the favorite. But if you talk to Peterson’s supporters, they will tell you he can beat Khan. Photo : Google Images As per video archive on Youtube it is clear that both men have the talent and ability to win. Analytical result of their career are as follow: 29-1 for Peterson and 26-1 for Khan. Khan is 5’10″ versus Peterson at 5’9″ and two years apart in age. At 27, Peterson is the elder man. KO ratio of Khan is over 66% while Peterson's ratio is just less than 50%. Khan has also been in with top contenders like Zab Judah, Dimitry Salita and Maidana. His only loss was also in 2008, to Breidis Prescott, who scored a 1st-round KO. His opposition has obviously been a notch above Peterson’s. Peterson happens to be one of the fair play kind of guys in the sport today. He was gracious before the fight and even mor...

The Curious Case of Cable Pirates

TV Channels borrow, Cable channels steals! Piracy of entertainment related software (movies & music) is blatant in both their physical (CD & DVD’s) & digital (download peer to peer sharing) & remains for the most part unchecked. The net effect of this is that pirated music & movies are freely available to any one who either has a computer with an internet connection or is willing to pay Rs. 30/= for a CD or DVD. May be this scenario does not sound terribly troublesome as you can argue legal music & movies are too expensive for almost 95% population of Pakistan but using these arguments also means ignoring impact of piracy in the layer content. The impact of piracy on media cannot be ignored. In 2004-05, license to cable operators were distributed like visiting cards, along with airing satellite& terrestrial channel & permission to run in house channel to generate advertising revenue. Cable operators needed content to air on their chann...

2 Cs of Pakistan: Cricket and Crime

It is being said 2 Cs are always out and loud in Pakistan Cricket and Crime. But we have seen a disastrous fusion of these 2Cs in the spot-fixing scandal.  Every cricketing country will have thrown up crimes of greater financial magnitude than this in the last 12 months, and Pakistan is particularly culpable. If a politician had done this, it wouldn't even have made it to the news but Sports make people win and lose, they laugh and they cry, but they strive at all times.  That is why what Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif have done evokes sadness and disillusionment in far greater measure than the financial implications of their act. But sportsmen come from the same society as everyone else. Among sportsmen are the noble, the diligent and the caring, as there are the callous, the cheats and the criminals. As an actor is good at delivering lines, a painter at creating art out of an empty canvas, so too are sportsmen at playing sport. We must ex...

Missing 9

Coming into  SAFF Championship 2011  with new coach Zavisa Milosavljevic taking charge of the team only a few weeks back meant that the team was under-prepared for the competition.  The Serbian rightly pointed out that they do not have a number nine in their team earlier and it was evident  in both games against Bangladesh and Maldives . They   put up a decent display but the Green Shirts were wasteful with their chances and their often-threatening tactics on the field were not converted into goals.  Spirit to win the match was present but player shows sign of fatigue in second half. Long passes unnecessary shot on targets were more than creating a chance.  Pakistani Football have shown signs of improvement but the Serbian has to do a lot of work.  I am looking forward for an upset in from this site in this tournament .

Creative Resume: Google never lies..

T20 is a Cricket too.

In recent times, from newspapers and message boards, in informal conversations, I had begun to get the feeling that 20-overs cricket was the root of all evil in the game And when I said I liked 20-overs cricket, I got curious responses. "No, you don't!" "That's Mickey Mouse cricket". "You have no editorial Judgement" I have always wondered why it has to be one or the other. Misbah or Afridi? Aqib or Waseem? Rap or classical? Burger or Bun Kabab?  I'm sorry but I like both Test cricket and 20-overs cricket. And the ODIs. I realise they demand different skills but I am unwilling to create a hierarchy of skills. Because we have been brought up believing one form is superior, or that the skills it demands are superior, it doesn't necessarily imply that other skills are trivial. We weren't allowed to respect different skills equally.  I fear we look at Test cricket and 20-overs with similarly prejudiced eyes. We grade them,...

I'm loving this Safari

I am falling in love with Jungle of this T20 , where food chain have been destroyed, I have seen Rams hunting Wolves, Panther swam to chase Dolphins making their way to Semis. I like this Jungle because it gives the next to star, hardworking cricketer a platform to showcase himself. Starving for international cricket, this jungle gives a chance to those that just play below the stars, and are actually good themselves; will not play in anonymity, before a small crowds; they won't become a statistics in First Class records that only their relatives will see. These are sportsmen who must make the most of the opportunity they get, you will see fantastic range of experience in this tournament. You felt for the young  talent from Hyderabad Hawks, Quetta Bears, you carried away with the energy and courage that  Afghan Cheetas bring to their cricket, you rejoice the cuteness of experienced first class cricketer who shies like a teenager givin...

Dont Judge the book by its cover

"Autobiography is about my life" says Shoaib Akhter.  If we agree, his life was controversial for us, then dah! his book will also be controversially ours. We should not judge the book by its cover, we have to understand its a autobiography and it contains 36 years of information in it. We have to analyze the era, the context, the flow of  the book. It will be so early to comment on the book & to give review about it. We need to have an editorial judgement before making any review. Let the iron be hot then we should stroke else on controversially your our comment will become controversial.

Afridi's retirement: A joke to cry

Afridi, who announced his retirement after differences with team management, interestingly did not get  separate time to speak with President Zardari in recent meeting for flood relief to discuss his retirement decision review. Sources said in meeting when an official tried to break ice on Afridi's matter President Zardari just smile, while PCB Chairman was also present. However, after head coach Waqar Younis's tenure came to an end after the farewell he received yesterday, Afridi express his desire to make a come back. Afridi should stop playing this hide n seek game and should make his mind once and for all. He has to understand that Cricket is a team game not individual. PCB and Pakistan Cricket is already facing a lot of issues ranging from no international cricket to  lack of domestic infrastructure, spot fixing to losing the weights of words in ICC, resignation to contractual tenure endings, corruption to bad management...

If teams have intent, success will follow

After almost two month of Cricket in two continents of the world, with the stories of their spirits & survival through barren cricketing times, Zimbabwe Cricket's fairy tale has ended and India's midnight tour has over. Both of them has realized that things could get  more difficult and they were out played by their oppositions. In both cases as a fan of losing side one has to understand that the result were terrible, but the cricket wasn't. England and Pakistan both played better cricket than I have seen them play in the years I have been following this game. Englan didn't just outplay India, they out-planned them. Over the last 18 months England has made that spot. They took time  getting there, made legislation, brought strong and successful people in charge, despite many changes remain same e.g. playing in subcontinent - but the intent is there. India can react this defeat in different ways. One is to assume...
