HOW QINGQI TURNED INTO A SPOILED CHILD

Spare the rod, and spoil the child. This proverb best defines the situation of one of the youngest and most preferred public transport of Pakistan in general and Karachi in particular, “”,  or  Chinchi as it is so generally mispelled . It might sound strange why all of sudden I started to curse this public transport. This is because this  problem child is on its way to become monster. How? Be patient I am telling first let me recover from the tiring journey I had today. “Ah! I miss you my beloved Bike, Get Well Soon”. What! I sound stupid???  I dare you to have a Qingqi journey and talk sense. Alright! Now let’s look at the positive aspects of this public transport. Unfortunately, being a male dominant society, we have less space not only in heart but public transport also. Female passengers were overlooked, not picked up and ignored by bus drivers and this space in Karachi was used by male passenger as one can see them hanging on bus like honey bees on...

CRIMEA AND KASHMIR: SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT

Dispute of Crimea is the result of Post cold war while Dispute of Kashmir is of Indo-Pakistan separation. Ukraine was firmly in the USSR orbit and so Crimea, Russian Part then, was joined to Ukraine. Kashmir was a Muslim Majority Area, ruled by a Hindu Emperor, wanted to join Pakistan after Independence but sold to India in a controversial manner. Crimean’s soul remains more loyal to the mother county Russia than their governed country Ukraine. Kashmiris facing invasion from India, die for their freedom and even face treason charges on cheering their beloved Pakistan’s victory in a cricket match. Finally, the people of Crimea vote for independence on referendum held on Sunday March 16, 2014. In addition, the Crimean parliament is now (when the lines are written) formally seeking to re-integrate itself with Russia. And the people of Kashmir are still pleading. Referendum in Kashmir is one of United Nation earliest resolution. Like Anti-Drones and many other resolutions, no one is gi...

STILL IN THE PIPELINE

Many new varieties and versions of abuses are expected from KESC, WAPDA and other  power generation  institutions in the coming days. Protests, sometimes violent, will be the most common street theaters. Engineers and technocrats will come up with different suggestions and figures for tackling electricity crisis. And the common denominator for all this chaos will be LOAD-SHEDDING. The only thing we won’t do will be to use the available resources. People of Thar are facing famine, but there is no way we would begin with our Thar Coal Project. The Chairman’s seat of  Planning and Development  Commission remains vacant because no one is eligible for the post; those who are eligible and competent are not interested. Because of this vacancy, no concrete and long-term power project is being planned and developed. Government is trying to cure cancer with aspirin. Small Projects like Pakistan Model Power Park at Gaddani are inaugurated by Government are appreciable, but ...

Tapeball Cricket in Pakistan

Despite the aggravating situation of electricity in Pakistan, the Electric tape business has never faced recession. The reason behind it is a surprising variation of cricket played with taped tennis ball. Tapeball cricket makes use of tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape. The most common place for this type of cricket is a neighborhood street. This variation of cricket is very popular in Pakistan and other South Asian countries. People typically play Tapeball cricket in narrow by-lanes, streets and parking lots. Normally, basic cricket rules are followed but “Rules are meant to be broken” here in this variation. Customized rules are followed as per venue and situation. Night Series, normally on Saturdays, are played to put some extra Bucks for Sunday’s Hangout.  Crictionary of this game is entirely different; some typical terms are used in this variation of Cricket that may not even be heard by Sachin, who has spent nearly a quarter of century playing Profe...
