Comics are back

In order to increase our language skills, my mother used to order me and my sister to read English newspaper on Sundays. She probably never forced us to read it rest of the week days because our lunches were packed in the same newspaper rest of the week. There was high probability that we will read; even a single line; while unwrapping them or eating them. Mum will always be Mum, Cutely Clever!

Mostly the packing of our lunches were done with the paper having short stories, crosswords, chess move and COMICS.  Cutely Clever Na! Mum will always be Mum!

Recently I visited to a Pizza Restaurant and found the crossword and fill color kind of Pamphlet. My friend started and solving it while waiting for the order to be served. It reminds me of my childhood. When I used to do the same, like solving cross, thinking chess move (which I never able to solve in my entire school life) while eating my school lunch.

A pathetic joke cracked by a friend of mine changes the whole screenplay and I was back in restaurant mentally. When we started puling his leg over his joke.

He surrendered saying "Its not mine! I read it over a comic on FB".

Screenplay Changed! I was again in my childhood reading comics and sometime editing them with our script. Technically, on the same visuals we used to script crazy and rubbish comments.

"Who's gonna pay the bill"? I am back again ,"Only School Lunches were FREE!" I sighed.

In night I logged in to FB and saw a news feed that YOMICS has been launched by Uday Chopra.

Graphic Art as an industry has not seen much prominence in the world and even much less here in Pakistan, yet I look around my self, I can't help but notice that Comics by Arslan had played a key role in promotion (publicity, in case he is not being paid for it) of Drama Serial  Hamsafar.

A person like me who has not watch the drama before, at-least give it a look. From marketing view point team Hamsafar with, direct or indirect, help of Comics by Arslan was able to promote their product.

In Bollywood YRJ Films has promoted Dhoom Film Series, Ek tha tiger through Yomics. And possibly going to promote nearly all the movies under YRJ Films umbrella via Yomics onwards

A panel on Indy Marketing 101  has told few things to know about making comics and market them.

The first is to be aggressive. You need to figure out the difference between being aggressive and being a douche. Most comic artists are not being aggressive enough when marketing their comic. The most interesting comics are often picked over the hippest comics.

I also believe that out of the box thinking is something very enjoyable and entertaining about Graphic Art. If you are introducing your self as a comic artist it is better to start with playing it safe.

Other advice for comic artists in terms of marketing:

  • Don’t send out the same press release. Change it up so that you’re not repeating yourself. Otherwise, you seem desperate and often annoy the comic press people you’re trying to get interested in your work.
  • Add images of your work with press releases in small files. If its 500MB, chances are that it won’t be seen.
  •  Publish often so that you keep an online readership interested.
  •  If you aggressively market your comic for six months and don’t hear any response back, try something new. Change up your comic a little bit. It might yield successful re

My Summer Reads

The current economic turmoil, political instability, judicial uncertainty, and military repositioning has influenced my bookshelf of the summer too much. My summer reading list compromises money management books.   1. The Psychology of Money: The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel. It is one of the finest books on understanding money and its management or we can say the relationship between Money and Human Behavior. The premise of the book is that we think of earning money as rational and logical but we spend money based on emotions and psychology. It consists of independent chapters on money, saving, investment, and spending. It can be read interdependently if you need recommendations on some specific targets.   2. Intelligent Investor: Intelligent Investor is written by Benjamin Graham. First published in 1949 and revised in 1972. It is a comprehensive and classic guide to investing but if you are interested in understanding classic strategies on the share mark...
